the system seems to be able to connect to the printer. the problem is that
the only thing that is light up is the alarm button. nothing else is light
or blinking. I tried the reset but still no go.

reset. and there is no reset on the 480 its just the red "Stop" button
instead with the upside down triangle in the cirle.

Christopher Pinterich: Hmm, I imagine this would do nothing for restoring default settings of
software on the computer... but, the color cartridge has been disabled so I
must try! Yes, the cartridge has ink, just refilled it. There are no
splotches of any color, nothing. It has been empty for a substantial
period of time, which could suggest the nozzles are completely sealed shut
from the old ink drying up. Maybe letting the inside and outside of nozzle
soak in alcohol, mineral spirits, or acetone could work?
