RollingWrench: I'm glad you mentioned this. It is rare to see scooters with a kick stand
switch. But that will throw you for a loop of you dont know about it.

not professional mechanics and often cannot afford to take their scooter to
one (That could be why the ride a chinese 50cc gy6). So they look for some
tips on things to look at. This is a great video for someone who doesn't

Fred Astair: Hello. I have a Tao Tao 50cc 2011 scooter with 283 miles on it. I bought it
from a guy who only rode it a few times, then put it up for the winter and
couldn't get it to start the next spring. I have replaced the stator coil,
CDI and the spark plug wire. I have tested for spark with 2 different spark
plugs. I do not get any spark, haven't and I've tested it after every
replacement of a part. The lights work. The engine cranks like it wants to
turn over, it just won't.

Ben Filley: exciter coil 80-800ohm. ig coil primary .2-10ohm, secondary 5k-30kohm
without a resistor cap, 7k-50k with resistor cap. to check the cid box,
check for battery voltage at the box, if it has voltage, and exciter and ig
coil check good, its the cdi. since you cant actually test the cdi, this is
the only way to systematically check to see if its cdi, or something else.
if you dont have minimum of 10.5vdc at the cdi, then you have a wiring
issue, non component related.

RollingWrench: if nether the coil or the cdi box are not the problem its probably the
stator. But your very first checks should be making sure all of your wires
on your plugs are perfect and not coming loose. One more think disconnect
the right side control switch. Use the kick starter to see if you have
spark. If you do spark after unplugging the right side switch, you have a
bad kill switch (or you can do a continuity test). Be sure that you do not
a kickstand switch, if you do be sure its up when starting.

around in the stator and mashed it to pieces :L

Fred Astair: My dad and I have tested with his power meter to make sure that the wires
all conduct electricity correctly and they do. We've checked the
connections and they all look fine. The spark plugs are new. I'm going
insane trying to figure out what's wrong with this scooter. I've looked so

RollingWrench: Ben, Thank you for your reply. The huge problem with Chinese scooters is,
Nobody works on them. Trying to get a correct spec for your Chinese year
make and models scooter is almost imposable. If you find a shop that will
actually work on your Chinese scooter you will pay them as much or even
more to diagnose the problem. We work on Chinese scooters professionally
and do not have access to specific specs.We use the parts in the video as
diagnostic tools.I hope this this clears up any questions

cdi box, and coil??
shaun reid: If you still don't get a spark most likely that you're starter is weak any
questions give me an email Shaun_Reid_cfc@hotmail.co.uk took me a long time
to get a spark after countless replacements of parts,
RollingWrench: Charles, No this will not effect the ignition spark at all. I think your
testing the volts on a/c switch your meter to d/c. You should have
12.5-13.20 volts on a fully charged battery with out the scooter started.
Once you start the scooter, there are two tests, test the voltage at 1k rpm
and 3k rpm. Both tests should be higher then 12 volts but not exceeding 15
volts, If your scooter over charges (over 15volts) you will blow out
headlights, taillights and your battery.

RollingWrench: You can test a coil, and stator for resistance. We have had very bad
experience doing it this way. The problem is there is many different
stators and resistance readings. However we do have many Chinese service
manuals. I would recommend purchasing a new cdi box and a new coil. This is
by far the simplest test. When purchasing them purchase performance coil
and cdi that way its not a waist if the parts are not the problem, on top
of that these are good diagnostic tools for later if needed.

RollingWrench: do you have spark? if so, check for fuel and compression if not. disconnect
the right control switch, and try to kick start it. this will eliminate the
kill switch from being the issue.
turbotom20g: How can I run a Chinese scooter with out a CDI box? I mean in the old days
and even now, that you will get signal from the stater straight to the
coil. It was more reliable that way, I seem to constantly replacing CDI
boxes over the past 2 years and it's getting annoying now.
paraglidermx: You can test the kill switch with a DVM on continuity test(BEEP)and check
for BEEP with switch in on position correct??
austin barker: I shut off my scooter it ran fine then now it has no spark I tried the plug

RollingWrench: Samual, For Honda's the procedure is a little different. Chinese scooters
are very difficult to find resistance specifications and the parts are very
low cost. Your Honda should have specs in the manual. I would hate to see
you spend a ton of money on parts when you can just figure out what part is

Ben Filley: dont mean to sound like an ass, but its better to have systematic checks,
rather than replace something and hope it works. because when replacing
those parts still doesnt fix the problem, you have to dig into the harness.
i work on real bikes, not just scoots. though i do love my scoot too. you
dont need an exact spec, if you have a generic spec it works, no 2 parts
are going to be identical, and having something be 1, or sometimes even 50
ohms out of spec, doesnt mean the part is defective.
